A Guide to Torsion and Extension Garage Door Springs

December 26, 2023

Understanding your garage door system is more complex than simply considering the door itself. An essential but often overlooked element of this system is the garage door springs. They play a pivotal role in the seamless opening and closing of your garage door. However, not all garage door springs are created equal. You have torsion springs and extension springs, which operate differently.

So, whether you're a new homeowner interested in learning about your door's system or you're considering a garage door spring replacement, this guide will delve into everything you need to understand regarding torsion and extension garage door springs.

Extension Springs

Separated from the garage door, extension springs are located between the roof and door tracks. Their mechanism of operation is to store energy whenever the door closes and to release it when the door opens. The purpose of an extension spring is to offset the weight of the door by extending, in contrast to a torsion spring's construction.

Elements of the counterweight assembly, like the pulleys, rear track hanger, and cables, are connected to extension springs. To counteract the door's weight when closed, the spring stretches at a steady rate. The spring steadily lowers the door as it opens, counteracting the weight of the door's remaining upper half.

An extension spring can be either open-looped, double-looped, or clipped-end. Open-looped springs require neither disassembly of the pulley nor eyebolt in order to be replaced. A major drawback of this design is that any harm caused to the spring requires a complete replacement.

Double-looped end springs are more robust, but their replacement may be more challenging due to the presence of two coils at the tip. However, hefty garage doors typically use clipped-end extension springs since they are the most long-lasting. Because they do not put as much strain on the spring, these springs will last longer. However, they are more challenging to replace.

Because extension springs can inflict harm if they escape, it is essential to take all necessary safety precautions while handling them. The safety cables that come with each extension spring keep them from accidentally shooting out in an accident. These safety cables are required to be in place whenever the door is in any position, whether it is open, shut, or moving.

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are a variety of helical springs that assist in the opening and closing of a garage door by applying torque or rotary force. A shaft or tube holds the springs overhead the garage door, while a cable drum or spool fastens them to either side of the door.

When opening or closing the door, the spring is wound or unwound, giving the door the required force. Torsion springs allow the garage door to glide smoothly and with balance since the force is distributed evenly along the shaft and drums.

Torsion springs are known for their superior durability and longevity when it comes to garage door springs. They are a popular option for both automated and manual garage door opening and closing since they make it simpler to do so.

The two most common varieties of torsion springs are torque master and standard. Most residential garage doors employ standard torsion springs, which are mounted over the garage opening. Depending on the door's weight and dimensions, the number of metal shaft supports might vary. However, torque master springs are the most secure option since they are encased in the torsion shaft and fastened at both ends by winding cones.
